This was my first VW engine build. It was a 1641cc Type 1. Engine block was a AS41 duel relief case and duel port heads and 10mm head studs.

Go fast bits consisted of an Engal 110 cam, Kadron 40mm Carburetors and a  Compufire electronic ignition conversion to the Bosch 009 Distributor. The rocker gear was fitted with Berg swivel feet adjusters. Air cleaners are Finer-Filter. Exhaust is a 4-into-1 Empi system with a hotdog muffler. LOUD!!!

The engine performed well on the open road. I one got 420Km out of one tank of fuel while on a long drive. Economy around town was pretty ordinary . This was most due the custom ratio setup in the gearbox. 3rd gear at 60 Km/h was 3000 RPM on the tacho.

I never had the opportunity to run the engine  on a dyno but estimate a power output of approximately 72-75 bhp. I had never wound the car out to top speed, but estimate that it would be somewhere around the 170Km/h mark. This is based on that the car was still accelerating at 4500RPM, and the speedo needle is pointing at the odometer.
